Aging Skin

  • Neuromuscular modulators

Neuromuscular modulators relax muscles which cause dynamic lines or wrinkles caused by active facial expression and are useful particularly for helping minimize the frown and horizontal lines of the forehead, the lines or “crows feet” around the eyes, and sometimes for the “pucker” lines about the mouth.

Botox® Cosmetic is our neuromodulator of choice at this time due to its long-standing reputation, proven effectiveness, and popularity among our patients. It is FDA-approved to treat frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, and wrinkles or “crows feet” around the eyes in adults though is commonly used in some other areas. The muscle relaxation effect lasts about 12 weeks and sometimes longer.

  • Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are useful for treating some of the static shadow lines of the face by instantly adding volume to fill-in and smooth out moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, particularly along the sides of the nose and mouth.

Juvéderm® is our preferred family of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers at this time due to the variety of formulations available, the relatively long duration of effect (from six months up to 2 years), the potential reversibility with hyaluronidase, and the low risk of side effects.

  • Chemical Peels

Chemical acids are applied to the skin to induce peeling and removal of the surface skin cells to smooth wrinkles and also can stimulate elastin and collagen to improve skin tone and texture and reduce laxity and sagging.

  • Laser Skin Rejuvenation

Laser Skin Rejuvenation is used to smooth skin wrinkles and improve skin tone and reduce laxity and sagging by peeling or ablating the surface skin cells and/or heating the skin to promote collagen and elastin production and remodeling in the skin.

Laser skin tightening with Nd:Yag and/or Erbium:Yag lasers via skin warming without actual surface ablation.

Laser skin resurfacing with Erbium:Yag laser via skin ablation (can be done to varying depths and with a full or fractionated laser beam).

  • Skin Care Products

Newport Cosmeceuticals are available which contain retinol, alpha hydroxy acids, and peptides as well as spot correctors and sunscreens to help treat the signs of aging and prevent further radiation damage from the sun.

  • Topical Prescription Medications

Prescription agents can be added to your regimen and picked up at local pharmacies (though are not usually covered by your insurance, as they are “cosmetic” agents). For example, tretinoin is a strong retinoid product that promotes skin cell turnover and renewal and hydroquinone is a spot corrector that can be in OTC products but requires a prescription for strengths of 4% or more.
